The Dangers of DIY Epoxy
Why should you call a pro when it’s time to refinish or coat a concrete surface? DIY’ing an epoxy finish isn’t as easy as it might sound.
The process starts with a thorough floor preparation process, which is absolutely critical for good long-term results. That means grinding or acid etching the concrete down to the substrate so the epoxy will have a surface to adhere to. It also requires patching or repair of any cracked or damaged areas. Many DIY disasters are caused by inadequate floor prep, leading to peeling of the epoxy or what’s called a “fisheye” – when contaminants on the surface cause a bubble or circle in the finish of the epoxy where it hasn’t fully adhered to the floor.
Once the floor is clean and prepped, it’s time to start application. Without professional tools or expertise, this can get messy, exhausting, and challenging quickly. To ensure an even finish, it’s imperative that the product is applied as instructed and mixed and/or applied evenly (harder than it sounds on your first try!) Ever gone to the effort of painting a wall to realize a few days later that it’s streaky? That’s a real possibility with DIY epoxy finishes…and one that is MUCH harder to fix than a streaky wall.
Finally, there’s the cleanup, which includes taking good care of the tools and safely disposing of any remaining product. Professionals do this daily, but it can be a little more challenging for the homeowner working out of their kitchen or garage.
